Hello People of the world. A quick update from me, been a while as per usual. I keep paying squarespace money and not really doing much over here in WWW land.
So today I’m gonna change that! Take that tech bros! … here’s the news that’s fit for the internet:

JACC/wirnan:

At the start of this year I moved into the Joynton Avenue Creative Centre. It’s an old nurses quarters in Southern Sydney on Gadigal land and it’s a City of Sydney creative space. I am a part of a collective of artists here called wirnan. Wirnan is a Miriwoong word that means the sharing of ideas. wirnan is run by my frequent collaborators Garuwa. It’s cool to be amongst so many wonderful talented artists and great people here.
Since I’ve been here I’ve completed work on a number of short films, some TVC’s and some work on a feature doco.

Facing The Numbers at MIFF

One of these projects is call Facing The Numbers and its going to premiere at MIFF in August

Content warning: please be advised the film and its subject contains themes of racial discrimination and instances of violence towards First Nations people.

FTN is a First Nations directed and led hybrid docu/drama told in 5 parts by firsthand storytellers about the effects of incarceration of First Nations peoples in Australia. Directed by my frequent collaborator Kieran Satour (Gurindji, Pertame and Worimi) alongside Tyson Perkins (Arrernte and Kalkadoon). The film highlights the strength and resilience of these storytellers giving a platform for their stories whilst also celebrating Blak stories, culture and art; presenting these stories of resilience and strength through re-enactments, archival footage, the poetry of Dr Romaine Moreton, spoken word by Kobie Dee and a score by some amazing indigenous and non-indigenous composers (including Freya Berkhout, Vincent Goodyer, Trials, Leon Rodgers).
I have scored two of the five stories and some dance sequences. I was so honoured to be able to learn these stories and be asked to write music. Very excited to watch this with an audience. If you aren’t in Naarm I’m sure you’ll catch the film at a festival near you soon.

Specsavers/Atipulku/other new
I recently completed work on a TVC for Specsavers/Fred Hollows Foundation.
Produced by TBWA and Garuwa and directed by Noongar/Spinifex filmmaker Tace Stevens‍.
The new Spcesavers collection is designed by Anangu Pitjantjatjara Yankunytjatjara artist and elder Atipulku Injtalki
who features in the TVC telling her story and painting on country on APY lands.

Other news
I’ll be accompanying my partner (and mostly hanging with our daughter) next month on a residency at Gunyah artist residency on Worimi country just near Port Stephens.
Looking forward to spending some time away from the hustle y bustle.

Been back into the baking. Busting out some nice loaves which you may have seen on my instagram stories.
They get loads more engagement than any music content. Maybe I should score (pun intended) some bread images or films. See below for a pic of a nice looking sesame tin loaf.

NAISDA Mid Year Show.
When I’m not making bread or music…I teach music at NAISDA dance college, Australia's leading performing arts training organisation specifically for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students..
The students learn how to use Logic pro and I also teach them about how to tell stories with music, supporting their concepts as a trainer and music mentor.
So it’s always rewarding when I get to see them perform and dance to their own music (like Sly Stone instructed). I recently got to see them in their mid year show up at the Arthouse Wyong which was directed by
Karul Projects’ Thomas ES Kelly and Taree Sansbury. It was really wonderful to hear the students orginal music amongst the other works in the show. Keep a look out for their end of year show on at Carriageworks later in the year,
which will continue celebrating the school’s 50th year.
